2 is company
Paul may be a blonde, baby-faced boy of 20, but he is fastidiously German and is by all means the head volunteer. This übermench is kind, clean, good natured, laid-back, attractive, organized, a fabulous chef, didn´t know a word of Spanish the day he arrived 10 months ago and is now totally proficient, better than I am. Also fluent in English. When he returns to Germany at the end of the summer, he´s going to school for mechanical engineering. After a hard day of farmwork, he likes to go to the gym in Cayambe. The übermench is, I think, better than I at everthing except for expressing his feelings with words. Needless to say, we have little to talk about. This week, it´s just him and me in the volunteer house, so it´s very quiet except for the übermench´s dance techno music, eminating gently from his spotless room.

my mental image of you has been replaced by my mental image of you and the techno viking. sweet!
Dear Rachel I am finally catchingup on your blogs. My computer would not go past June 14. I like the idea of culture shock. you are a stranger in your world and then become a stranger to yourself. It takes time to find a new identity and to be the person you are despite being the person you have never been but will become. While Mass to Ecuador is massive there are others to come (like graduation) where you leave the womb of college life and concerns and find that you have to get adopted by someone and something. Change and discovery is wonderful and it does not end at least not for me. I am very pleased that you have facility with the language For many years I was prejudiced against learning another language. Some years later it occurred to me I had already learned a second language, English. And was little interested in learning a third (Span_
It is hard to be vigilant in the buses, on the streets and in most places you go. I suspect your basic feeling is to be trusting and open. My guess is that it is hard to find the right balance some of the time. Reading is good. Good books are good. Catching chickens is a learning experience (for both of you_ More power to the chicken catchers of the world. Catch is OK, Eating them is an ethical issue. Here at ranch St Louis the heat wave has exhausted most everyone. We are in the midst of change. I need a larger work space for my tools, now that I have more time to work with them. Until it is complete the place is a disorderly , cantfindathing mess. More later Hope I pass the word verification test. Love to you, Zaydie
